Mental Health Collaborative

The Mental Health Collaborative (MHC) is a counseling internship program focused on serving UNM students at various student resource centers (Women’s Resource Center, El Centro de la Raza, and the Accessibility Resource Center). MHC aims to increase mental health access through trauma-responsive and culturally and linguistically centered services by equipping mental health masters-level internship students with competent professional development and supervision focused on anti-oppressive practices tailed to address race-based trauma and gender violence.

About our Counseling Services

MHC’s counseling services consist of short-term counseling services open on the first day of classes and run for the duration of a semester (6-14 sessions). Our counseling team offers telehealth or in-person sessions (offices at El Centro, WRC, and North Campus-Vassar House) in both English and Spanish. To be matched with a counselor, students interested in services need to fill out our intake form. This intake process closes in November (for the Fall semester) or April (for the Spring semester) to ensure that a minimum of 6 sessions can be offered before the end of each semester. Additionally, MHC offers psychoeducation workshops on wellness and self-care throughout the academic year. If you have any questions, please reach out to mhccounseling@unm.eduwrcounseling@unm.eduelcentrocounseling@unm.edu, or arccounseling@unm.edu.

 About our Internship Program

MHC’s counseling internship consists of 1) in-depth training on the treatment of complex trauma and the assessment of suicide risk, 2) a multi-layer supervision model focused on trauma-informed care and anti-oppressive approaches, and 3) experiential learning opportunities to develop multicultural, social justice, advocacy, and bilingual counseling competencies. If you’re a counseling student interested in joining our internship team, please contact Ivette Acevedo Weatherholtz at ivetteaw@unm.edu.
